What is sgBridge?
sgBridge stands for Singapore Bridge, and is also known as Floating Bridge. sgBridge is a variant of Contract Bridge where partners are not fixed. This variant is much easier to pick up than Contract Bridge and could be a fundamental step for players who wish to learn Contract Bridge.
The game is played with a standard deck of 52 cards. One player will be identified as the Dealer. Starting from the player on the left of the Dealer, and rotating in a clockwise direction, each player will be dealt 13 cards. The player on the left of the Dealer will begin the Bidding round, until 3 players have passed. The winner of the bid will call for a partner who can help him win the required number of tricks. For example if you bid 4 Spades and have Ace, King and Queen of Spades, he would call Jack of Spades as your partner card and together aim to win 10 (Bid + 6) tricks. The defenders, which are the other 2 players, will have to win 4 (8 - Bid) tricks. The objective of the game is to win as many tricks as possible. Points awarded to each of the winning partnership is based on 2(Bid - 1). The higher the bid, the higher the number of points received for winning. No points will be awarded for extra tricks won.
sgBridge vs Contract Bridge
In Contract Bridge, partners are pre-determined and are seated on the opposite side of the table, such as North-South and East-West partners. The bidding system in Contract Bridge signals to the partner what cards you have in your hand. Also, the Dummy or partner does not participate in the game, leaving the winning bidder to pick the cards.
sgBridge vs Hearts
If you play Hearts, you should be able to pick up Singapore Bridge easily. In sgBridge, the player on the left of the bid winner, or the bid winner himself will start the game instead of the player with the two of clubs. The player with the highest card in the original suit wins the trick, unless the trump card is played.
In hearts, a player cannot lead a trick with hearts. In sgBridge, with the Break Trump option turned on, a player cannot lead with the trump suit, unless the trump has been played previously or has only trump suits left in his hand.
In sgBridge, players try to win tricks whereas in Hearts, players try to lost tricks.
sgBridge vs Spades
In Spades, partners are fixed like in Contract Bridge. The trump is always Spades. Players take turns to place a bid of the number of tricks he can win. The partnership will have to win the combined number of tricks. Failure to do so will result in deduction of points.
